What Is CliftonStrengths®? A Coach's Guide to Strengths-Based Growth

CliftonStrengths Coaching: Why Starting With What Is Strong Changes Everything

Most of us grew up learning to fix what was broken. If math was hard, you got a tutor. If you were too quiet, someone told you to speak up. If you were too much, someone told you to dial it down.

By the time a woman walks into a coaching session, she has often spent decades doing the same thing at work. Fixing. Correcting. Trying to become something she is not quite sure she is.

CliftonStrengths coaching starts somewhere different. Instead of asking "what needs to change," it asks "what is already working."

That shift sounds small. It is not.

What Is CliftonStrengths?

CliftonStrengths is a Gallup-developed assessment that identifies a person's most dominant talent themes, the recurring patterns in how they think, feel, and behave. It is not a personality label. It is not a box to put someone in. It is a clear picture of natural wiring, backed by decades of research and data from millions of people worldwide.

When clients see their results, something interesting happens. They get language for things they have felt for years but could never quite explain. Why they gravitate toward certain problems. Why some environments energize them and others drain them. Why a particular strength that helps them lead in one setting needs to be adjusted in another.

For women especially, that language matters. A lot of women have spent years being told they are "too much" or "not enough" in some way. CliftonStrengths does not tell you to be less of anything. It tells you what you already are and gives you a way to use it on purpose.

Why Does Strengths-Based Coaching Work?

Strengths-based coaching works because it builds from alignment rather than correction, and alignment creates momentum faster than fixing ever does.

Coaching clients often arrive with goals like "I want to be more confident" or "I need to communicate better." Those are real goals. But without something concrete underneath them, they can stay vague for months.

CliftonStrengths gives those goals a foundation. When someone understands her natural advantages, she can make smarter choices about where to focus. She stops trying to be good at everything and starts getting intentional about what she is actually built for.

There is also something else that happens, and it is worth naming. A lot of women carry quiet shame around the places where they struggle. They have been told, directly or indirectly, that those gaps are the problem. Strengths-based coaching does not ignore those areas. But it shifts the starting point. When someone sees that her challenges are not proof that she is failing, that she is not broken, that shift creates room to actually move forward.

It is easier to build habits, solve problems, and take action when someone feels like herself. Not like a project.

How Can CliftonStrengths Help With a Career Change?

CliftonStrengths coaching provides the clarity and confidence to make career decisions based on who you actually are, not who you think you should be.

I recently worked with a client who came to me during a career transition. She was looking for a new position and was not sure what direction to take. We started with six sessions built around her CliftonStrengths assessment. Knowing her Top 5 gave her the clarity to make decisions about what was good for her, her work, and her family. There were layers of wins because we led with her strengths instead of leading with fear or a checklist of qualifications.

She got the job. And then she signed on for six more sessions so I could support her through the transition into her new role.

That is what CliftonStrengths does when it is paired with real coaching. It does not just help you figure out what to do next. It helps you trust why you are choosing it.

For women navigating career changes, this matters even more. Women tend to second-guess themselves at decision points. They wait until they feel 100% ready instead of recognizing they are already built for it. CliftonStrengths takes the guessing out of it. Your strengths are not aspirational. They are who you already are.

What Are the Four CliftonStrengths Domains?

The 34 CliftonStrengths themes are grouped into four domains, each describing a different way people naturally contribute to the world around them.

Executing themes help people make things happen. These are the people who get it done, often before anyone else has finished talking about it.

Influencing themes help people move ideas forward and reach others. They bring energy, persuasion, and presence.

Relationship Building themes help people create trust, connection, and cohesion. They are the glue in teams and in life.

Strategic Thinking themes help people analyze information, see patterns, and plan ahead. They process before they act.

Understanding your domain gives you a lens for how you naturally operate, in teams, in leadership roles, and in everyday interactions. It also shows you where you might be overusing a strength or underusing one you have not paid much attention to.

For women leading teams or stepping into new roles, knowing your domain is like finally reading the manual for how you are already wired. You stop trying to lead like someone else and start leading like yourself.

What Does CliftonStrengths Coaching Actually Look Like?

In a CliftonStrengths coaching session, you unpack your results with a trained coach who helps you turn insight into something you can actually use in your daily life, your career, and your relationships.

The assessment gives you insight. The coaching session turns that insight into action.

A client who is highly driven may need support in slowing down and listening more deeply. A client who is highly relational may need help making faster decisions without second-guessing. In both cases, the strengths are not the problem. The coaching is about learning to use them with more balance and intention, depending on the situation in front of you.

That is where the real work is. Not in the results report, but in the conversation that follows.

I have worked with hundreds of women through CliftonStrengths, in individual coaching sessions and in workshops with groups of coaches and professionals. The pattern I see over and over is this: women already know something is strong in them. They just have not had anyone help them name it, trust it, and build from it.

What CliftonStrengths Coaching Is Not

Strengths-based coaching is not about only focusing on the positive. It does not pretend challenges do not exist. It simply approaches growth by starting from what is already working rather than starting from what is not.

Your results are also not a permanent definition of who you are. They are a snapshot of your natural patterns at a point in time. People grow, adapt, and change. The assessment is a starting point, not a ceiling.

And your strengths are not a one-size-fits-all playbook. A theme that serves you in one context may need to be adjusted in another. That discernment, knowing when to lean in and when to pull back, is part of what good coaching helps you build.

Who Is CliftonStrengths Coaching For?

CliftonStrengths coaching is especially valuable for women in leadership, career transitions, or any season where they want more clarity about how they operate and what comes next.

It is for leaders who want to stop managing from someone else's playbook. Entrepreneurs who want more clarity about how they make decisions. Coaches who want to use CliftonStrengths in their own practice. Professionals stepping into a new role, building something new, or leading a team for the first time.

For teams, it opens up a different kind of conversation. One about how to appreciate different working styles instead of trying to standardize them.

And honestly? It is for any woman who has spent too long trying to fix what was never broken in the first place.
