MENTOR COACHING

This isn’t about performing for the ICF.

It’s about becoming the Coach your clients deserve and earning the credential that reflects it.

Why ICF Coaching

I’m Amy Magyar, PCC, a credentialed ICF Mentor Coach who knows firsthand what it takes to grow into a confident, masterful coach. I’ve made just about every mistake a coach can make…overexplaining, rescuing, stacking questions, under-trusting, rushed questions, over-talking, and under-trusting. I’ve done the deep work to transform those lessons into mastery. And I’m here to guide you through yours, turning those tricky moments into your greatest growth. We will shorten the learning curve, sharpen your competencies, and step into your credentialing process with clarity, confidence, and power.

The ICF defines Mentor Coaching as professional guidance to help Coaches achieve and demonstrate the Core Competencies required for their desired credential. This means the focus is on developing your coaching skills, not on business strategies, life balance, or unrelated topics. Mentor Coaching is a required part of the ICF credentialing process, and it’s also an invaluable opportunity to build confidence, refine your presence, and show up fully as the Coach you want to be.

What You Can Expect

“As a therapist transitioning into running a coaching practice, I thought I knew how to guide clients, but Amy helped me translate my skills into a coaching presence that’s powerful, clear, and completely my own. By the end of our sessions, I wasn’t just credential-ready, I felt confident, authentic, and excited to show up fully as a Coach. Amy doesn’t just prepare you for the ICF credential; she helps you own your coaching voice."

FAQs

  • The International Coaching Federation (ICF) was created in 1995 to give support to Coaches and encourage the growth of the profession. Now it is one of the major Coaching associations with more than 20,000 members out of 47,500 Coaches around the world. They credential a select few to become ICF-certified Coaches each year – is it your time this year?

Mentor Coaching is an important requirement of the ICF credentialing process and vital to your development and growth if seeking an ICF Credential. But is also a valuable journey for those who want to be more at ease and feel confident in how they appear in their work.

The ICF defines Mentor Coaching as providing professional assistance in achieving and demonstrating the levels of Coaching competency demanded by the desired credential level sought by a Coach‐applicant (mentee). Furthermore, Mentor Coaching means an applicant (mentee) being coached on their Coaching skills rather than coaching on practice building, life balance, or other topics unrelated to the development of an applicant’s coaching skill.

Having an experienced accredited Mentor Coach means you have a partner on your journey – a partner who offers you support, encouragement and guidance along the way. So you don’t feel like you are stuck in a forest with no clear path…

Mentor Coaching is like having someone help you cut a path through a dense forest. They can act as a beacon. A flashlight. Or perhaps a lighthouse.

  • Some training or schools do actually provide mentor coaching in their programs, but in many cases, there is an additional fee for it.

For those programs that do offer mentor coaching, even the best programs can’t cover everything specific to an individual Coach’s needs and blind spots.

And that’s where mentor coaching comes in. This isn’t about repeating what you’ve already learned; it’s about turning your knowledge into your unique coaching style, strengthening your Core Competencies, and giving you the confidence to show up fully in every session.

Think of it as shortening the learning curve, catching what you might miss, and leveling up faster than you could on your own.

  • ICF Mentor Coaching Requirements (Credentialing and Renewals)

Mentor Coaching must focus on developing and demonstrating your coaching skills in alignment with the ICF’s Core Competencies - not business strategy, marketing, or unrelated professional topics.

    Total Hours Required:

    • You must complete a minimum of 10 hours of mentor coaching to apply for an ICF credential (ACC, PCC, or MCC).

    Minimum Time Frame:

    • These 10 mentor coaching hours must be completed over at least three months. That timeframe gives space for feedback, reflection, practice, and growth…not rushed attendance.

    Individual vs. Group Sessions:

    • At least 3 hours must be in one‑on‑one mentor coaching (individual sessions with your mentor).

    • The remaining up to 7 hours can be completed either one‑on‑one or in group mentor coaching with no more than 10 participants per group.

    Who Can Deliver Mentor Coaching:

    • Your Mentor Coach must be an ICF‑credentialed coach (e.g., ACC, PCC, MCC).

For ACC credentialing/renewals, the Mentor Coach must have at least the credential level you’re applying for (and typically must have renewed at least once if ACC).

For PCC or MCC mentoring, the Mentor Coach must hold the same or higher credential level.
